e.g. H2O Is is an atom or a molecule, element or compound.
    Do a bunch of examples.

    5. Experiment: Weigh out 8 grams of salt. Dissolve it in a little warm water. All the water to evaporate off and reweigh the salt. It should still weigh 8g.
Possible sources of error: dirt and dust will accumulate while waiting, the salt may retain some water increasing its weight.
    Mixtures and pure substances:
    What is the difference?
Name me something - place it on one side of the board or the other. (most will be mixtures)
    Mixtures and solutions:
a mixture occurs when the 2 or more substances are unevenly mixed.
A solution occurs when the 2 substances are completely evenly mixed.
(suspensions and colloids are homogeneous mixtures.
Why is this important: think of everything we need: oxygen in water, air is a solution, blood is a solution (carries oxygen carbon dioxidie, nutrients, waster, etc
    WATER
Such a special substance: Dissolves so many things.
Try oil and water: Dissolve salt, sugar, pepper,

the difference between a proper fraction and an improper fraction
the relationship between a mixed number and an improper fraction
This is the third option, but I like it.
    Lesson 1:
In partners, students get a variety of manipulatives: shapes, unifix cubes, cuisoniere rods, pebbles, base ten blocks, pencil and paper.
They have 5 minutes to show 1/2 (include the whole because without the comparison, anything could be a half) in as many ways as possible.
    Discuss
Write down what a half means, by completing the sentence: A half is ...... They may not use the word half again.
Discuss. Introduce the idea of division
5 minutes to show 1/3 in as many ways as possible. Discuss. My class missed the 1 out of three idea, so I had to show them 1 white pebble and 2 green pebbles. They did not get it. I did not explain. They would get it eventually.
    Lesson 2:
Repeat with 1/5. Ask them to show 2/5, 4/5 and 2/3. Again, my class could not do 2 white pebbles and 3 green pebbles show 2/5. Some are getting the idea.
    Lesson 3:
Using only 20 pebbles, make 2/5. This caused endless confusion! They insisted on putting 5 pebbles out, or 2 sets of 5 pebbles. Did not get it.
Repeat using 12 pebbles. Make 2/3, 3/4 etc.
Ask them to compare 2/3 and 3/4.

    Lesson 1:
Divide students into groups of 3 or 4 students. Each group needs

Life: Breathe on the jelly and tell them you have breathed the breath of life into the gelatine. Laugh while doing this. Make sure they do not take you seriously and understand we cannot really give the gelatine life.
List all the other options they suggest that it needs to have life. Take their ideas and put them into systems and learn about them one by one to turn the gelatine in to a body.
